Brunei - The Adobe of Peace

Brunei is a tiny country on the island of Borneo, bordered by Malaysia and the South China Sea. Brunei is a majority Muslim country with a population of around only 450,000 people. The official language is Standard Malay, but most people speak a dialect of Malay in everyday contexts. The country is very rich in oil, making the king of Brunei stupid wealthy. Meanwhile the citizens of Brunei enjoy no income tax and free education.

With it being such a small nation, it was hard to find very many foods that are truly native to Brunei. But the one that kept coming up in my google search was Nasi Katok.

This is a dish made of plain white rice, fried chicken, and a sambal sauce. It's simple and really, really tasty. In fact, I made it two nights in a row!

The steps for making Nasi Katok are very simple. Follow this video to see for yourself. A few notes: I had to improvise the sambal both times I made it because I couldn't find red chili peppers, but I did have a few green ones. I used the chilis along with small red peppers, and then my small green garden peppers the next night. (I think that changes the nature of the meal a bit, but it still tasted great!) I also used my deep fryer in the garage to fry the chicken instead of doing it on the stove. I hate when that fried oil smell lingers for days in the house, so I do my best to avoid it!

This meal was one of my favorites. 10/10 stars, I recommend it to all your friends and family. But Younes just gave it an 8/10. He said it was great, but very simple. Which HELLO, that's why it's perfect in my book. He also doesn't like rice, so that's an automatic deduction. The sambal, however, was a big hit with the resident critic, who said it made the rice bearable 😂. Personally, I liked the ginger/turmeric marinade for the chicken, it gave it a distinct flavor that is very unlike the southern fried chicken I usually make. Like I said though, I made this two nights in a row so it was a pretty big hit!
